Mamou is a soulful poet emcee and spoken word artist who engages audiences with natural wit and a commanding baritone. Hailing from Richmond, VA, Mamou embarked on his musical path and honed his poetic skills as a resident open mic host at the Underground Railroad Jazz Cafe. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Mamou's passion for spoken word led him to co-found the avant-garde group Jazz Poets Society. Influenced by the 90’s golden era of hip-hop and inspired by artists like The Last Poets and Digable Planets, Mamou's genre-blending style combines cool horns, thick beats, and jazz poetry, resulting in critically acclaimed and thought-provoking lyrical content.

With notable appearances alongside spoken word luminaries like Gil Scott Heron and Ursula Rucker, as well as sharing stages with legendary acts including Wyclef Jean, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Roots, Mamou's impact is undeniable. From hosting intimate open mics to touring college campuses and music festivals, to performing live on BET, his socially conscious and thought-provoking messages resonate deeply with audiences.

Mamou's discography includes the critically acclaimed debut studio album, "Poets Lounge," and the dynamic live recording of "Poets Lounge: The Show." Noteworthy songs like "What If Rosa Parks Had a Car" and "Aboriginals" demonstrate his ability to challenge conventional narratives while exploring socio-political themes.

The surname Mamou derives from the name of a noteable Louisiana town.  Informally, the phrase, “the big ma-mou” [bìg me moo] means ‘the key element’ or ‘most crucial thing’.  Mamou's improvisational performances are a testament to his natural ability as a jazz poet and musical maestro – always conducting the flow.  As a performer, Mamou invites audiences on a transformative journey, where his powerful words and deep baritone create a magnetic presence that is unforgettable.
